Brisbane North Oasis is a congregation affiliated with Churches of Christ in Queensland, and part of the “family” of Churches of Christ throughout Australia, which had their roots in the Restoration Movement of the early 1800’s in the United States.
Brisbane North was an amalgamation of Albion Church of Christ, (then meeting at McLennan Street Albion), and Kedron Church of Christ (meeting at our current location) in 1992.
The Albion church had been established in 1911, and one of the churches it eventually “gave birth” to was the Kedron congregation, established in 1929 after a tent mission.
Following the example of its “mother” church, Kedron also planted a congregation in 1952 to meet a need in the post-war, virtually new suburb of Stafford. Stafford Church of Christ met in a converted Army Nissen Hut near the corner of Stafford and Trouts Roads. This church closed its doors in 1989, with most of the remaining members transferring back to the Kedron church.
Both Albion and Kedron experienced and ministered through the “highs and lows” of the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war baby boom. At one point in the 1930’s Albion ran a soup kitchen which fed up to 1000 people per week.
Considerable work was done on the site in 2000, and further upheaval took place between 2009 and 2013 while the Inner-City Busway and Airport Link tunnels were constructed. Across this time, a migrant bread distribution program, community garden and substantial involvement in both the local high and primary schools were a feature of what we did.
Brisbane North Oasis continues to ponder how we can best respond to the needs within our current community, recognizing that change always takes place and it’s important to be open to new ways God may guide us in the future. As part of this, we developed a 5-year plan in 2021 focusing around re-engaging with families and others in our local area. Being an oasis for our local community was one of the key outcomes, and what better way to represent the changes than by adding it to our name along with some property upgrades.
